School of the Earth is a vision for what the Gallatin School of Individualized Study at New York University should be like in 2061 at Albert Gallatin’s 300th birthday. The envisioned new school is designed with our planet in mind. It is a school designed to fit the local ecosystem. This book was born from a dedicated class of students lead by professors Peder Anker and Mitchell Joachim. Humans have done enough taking, the students argue, and it is time to start giving back. Giving back to our planet and each other. The world is more connected than ever before and it is only going to become increasingly more intertwined and complicated. School of the Earth is about the necessity of connection, not only from human to human but between nature and people as well. The new vision for the Gallatin School is complete with visionary images and a model created to educate students and the public that not only is it possible for humans to exist while giving back, but that we can help make the planet a better, healthier place for the future as well.
The book, the exhibition, the model, a film, a published manifesto in Confluence, and the web site were the final results made by students of the class “Designing for New Climates: Histories of Adaptation” co-taught with Mitchell Joachim.

Edvard Munchs Aulamalerier: Fra kontroversielt prosjekt til nasjonalskatt (Edvard Munch’s Aula Paintings: From Controversal Project to National Treasure), with Patricia G. Berman, (Oslo: Messel Forlag, 2011).
[Norwegian] I 1911 skulle Universitetet feire sitt hundreårsjubileum. I den anledning ble Aulaen på Karl Johans gate bygget som en storslått gave og markering av institusjonen. De elleve maleriene som pryder Aulaen hang ikke der ved åpningen, men ble alle malt mellom 1909 og 1916 i en atmosfære av kulturpolitisk kontrovers. Munchs Aulamalerier ble malt etter intense interne dragkamper blant kunstekspertisen, for så å forårsake en like spent offentlig debatt om deres kunstneriske verdi. I dag er de en nasjonalskatt. Denne antologien dokumenterer malerienes dramatiske historie fra de første skisser til den tekniske forfatning de nå befinner seg i snart hundre år etter tilblivelsen

[Norwegian] Mediene har lenge foret oss med negative nyheter om jordens tilstand, godt hjulpet av miljøvernere. Forfatterne av denne boken ønsker å gi en litt annen versjon av forholdet mellom miljø og menneske. I den tro at konstruktiv kritikk ikke undergraver miljøvernet, men bidrar til å fornye og styrke det, er det i denne boken samlet et knippe kritiske innspill i den pågående miljødebatten. Med bidrag fra Bjørn Lomborg, Pedr Anker, Erling Fossen, Arne Kalland, Nils Roll-Hansen, Tarjei Rønnow og Jens Saugstad. Boken er skrevet med tanke på studenter i miljørelaterte fag ved universiteter og høgskoler, men kan også lese av alle som er interessert i miljø- og samfunnsspørsmål.
